community impact

issues-based key initiatives

The Junior League of High Point, Inc. is striving to address issues with critical needs in our community that fall within the emphasis of positively impacting the lives of children and women. Our initiatives address unmet needs, yet do not take away from existing community efforts, other JLHP placements, and opportunities. Each project provides initial and ongoing training to our members as well as high-quality service to its community partners.

We are currently steering our community impact efforts to focus on hunger and women's health and wellness issues. Many people aren't aware that our community has been ranked number one in the nation for food hardship.  In fact, there are seven food deserts in the High Point area making it difficult for our neighbors to secure food.  As a women's organization we strive to aid women in getting back on their feet and building healthy lives.

A FEW OF OUR Community impact projects

Let's Get Cooking!

As our new member project for 2022, we are partnering with Reading Connections. This organization works with locals of High Point to improve their literacy in all areas. In meeting Mary, the High Point Reading Connections Coordinator, she informed us that many of their students are from other countries and are studying English to further their education, some after leaving high positions in their own countries. Our goal with this project was to promote literacy to women in our community and we quickly learned cooking was a large part of each of our student’s home and culture.

Baby Basics Care Packages

Junior League of High Point members donated, assembled and delivered over 300 baby care packages to the Baby Basics Closet at the High Point YWCA. These packages are filled with important necessities such as baby wipes, diaper rash cream, baby soap, lotion and more. The YWCA Baby Basics Closet is part of the YWCA's Women Resource Center which supports women and families by providing a range of services to meet their needs and help them achieve their personal and professional goals.

Kids in the Kitchen

The goal of the Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen initiative, which is supported by The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. and its member Leagues, is to promote child health and wellness by empowering children and youth to make healthy lifestyle choices, therefore preventing obesity and its associated health risks.

In the 2018-2019 League year, the Junior League of High Point, Inc. partnered with the YWCA of High Point  and the Millis Regional Health Education Center to host a program for local schoolchildren aimed at healthy eating and living.

Crock-Pot Cooking Class

The Junior League of High Point has partnered with the YWCA's Adolescent Parenting program to provide young mothers nutritional information and cooking resources to allow them to better feed themselves and their families.  The Crock-Pot Cooking Class is an educational workshop that includes a tutorial on healthy eating, focused specifically on the nutritional needs of women and children.  League members demonstrate how to use a Crock-Pot to provide affordable, nutritious and hearty meals for a family.  This class provides all participants with their own Crock-Pot, a healthy recipe book, and several ingredients and kitchen tools.

Dinner with the League

Dinner with the League provides our members the opportunity to prepare and share a hearty, home-cooked meal for homeless women and families in our community.  The dinner is designed to provide nourishment and encouragement for those who reside at local shelters as they work to put their lives back on track.  In recent years, the Junior League of High Point has partnered with Family Service of the Piedmont to prepare and serve meals at their Family Services shelter and West End Ministries' Leslie's House, in addition to the Salvation Army's Center of Hope Family Shelter.

Holiday Toy Drive

The Junior League of High Point partners with the High Point Hartley Drive Family YMCA to support the Toy Drive in conjunction with the 5 Before the Feast event that occurs on Thanksgiving Day.   League Members serve as volunteers during the Fun Run and 5K, in addition to collecting toys.
