Let's Get Cooking!

As our new member project for 2022, we are partnering with Reading Connections. This organization works with locals of High Point to improve their literacy in all areas. In meeting Mary, the High Point Reading Connections Coordinator, she informed us that many of their students are from other countries and are studying English to further their education, some after leaving high positions in their own countries. Our goal with this project was to promote literacy to women in our community and we quickly learned cooking was a large part of each of our student’s home and culture.

With this project, we will be meeting in two groups of four; including three JLHP new members and one foreign-speaking student to prepare a meal together at the Junior League House. We will promote literacy by meeting with our students a few times to get to know each other, then meeting at a grocery store to gather ingredients for our meal, and meeting at the house to film a short video as a, “cooking segment”. The new members will be helping the student read, speak, and functionally understand English with this project, and the JLHP members will gain new experiences with other cultural backgrounds.
