Briles House Fundraising

Briles House Fundraising Information

Members will see components of the new capital campaign to support the Briles House in the New Year as the League moves toward launching Pledge +2. The committee has worked hard to reference elements of the original capital campaign for the house initiated in 2002-2003 while highlighting the importance of the community service project that preserving the house has become.

Pledge +2 for League members recognizes all that we do each year in support of our headquarters. Both Actives and Sustainers will be asked to participate in the campaign so the League can state that 100% of its members made gifts to the campaign at its start. The accomplishment of reaching 100% participation aids the League when we ask foundations or individuals for substantial gifts for the house.

Pledge +2 is simple and below are a few of the +2 options for both Actives and Sustainers. The pledge component is up to you and made based on your own personal situation – make a one-time gift, pledge a gift over time – 2011 through 2013 or set up a recurring gift to the League such as a quarterly charge to your credit card or direct debit from your bank account that that meets your personal needs. We have plenty of options to accommodate our membership.

Making progress: As shared in the September newssheet, the balance on the interest-only mortgage was at approximately $460,000. Based on gifts between September and December of 2010, we have made two principle payments totaling $7,520 in addition to our monthly interest payments. We would like to thank everyone who donated – especially the gifts at the end of the year after the postcard was sent. Every gift – large and small – makes a difference in our ability to eliminate this debt.

Active members +2 suggested options:
• Use the Briles House for a personal event – shower, party, meeting – call the League office to get started
• Stock the House with needed household supplies at the first General Membership Meeting
• Give a gift outside your pledge such as an honorarium or memorial
• Volunteer at the annual Briles House Clean Sweep event in July
• Help decorate for the holidays or undecorate in January
• Refer a friend to the Briles House Fundraising Committee who makes a pledge or gift
• Add the League and the Briles House to your estate planning
• Use your company matching gift to ‘increase’ your pledge, if available

Sustaining members +2 suggested options:
• Using the Briles House for a personal event – shower, party, meeting, bridge or book club event, a special tea or social event
• Give a gift outside your pledge – an honorarium or memorial
• Be a Super Sustainer and round your annual dues payment up and participate in the fastest Sustainer-led fundraiser in League history. In 2010, Sustainers raised $5,300 by simply rounding their dues payment up by $75.
• Spread the word about the importance of this campaign being successful for the long-term sustainability of our League
• Support the activities of the Sustainer-led Trowel & Error Garden Club whose purpose is to improve and maintain the grounds surrounding the Briles House.
• Attend the League’s Kentucky Derby Party on the first Saturday in May
• Refer a friend to the Briles House Fundraising Committee who makes a pledge or gift
• Add the League and the Briles House to your estate planning
• Use your company matching gift to ‘increase’ your pledge, if available

The Briles House Fundraising Committee hopes all members will consider a monetary pledge to the campaign. The League already supports the Briles House with the proceeds from the annual Kentucky Derby Party. However, these proceeds are directed to cover House operating expenses such as utilities and maintenance on the house. The proceeds are not substantial enough to be used towards paying down the mortgage.

We would like to say thanks to the following Sustainers, who as members of the Briles House Strategic Planning Committee, 2009-2010 have provided counsel to our committee on how to position this campaign with members and in the greater High Point community to have the greatest success. We appreciate Karen Odom, Courtney Best, Harriet Mattess, Anne Andrews, Mary Jarrell, Margaret Lewis, Molly Froelich, Robin Miller, Susan Culp, Ann Busby and Alison Collins for their input and dedication to the League!

If you have questions, please discuss it with a member of the committee listed below. Be on the lookout for your packet in the mail and return your pledge card by the date in the packet.

More content….Background on the House:
The League bought the Briles House in 2002 with funds raised to purchase it and completed the renovations in 2007 when our headquarters were moved into the second-level of the historic home. The house was built in 1907 by Lee and Bertie Briles, an important historical family in the community involved in banking, lumber and gold mining in North Carolina. The house passed down in the Briles family until the death of Miss Ruth Briles, at the age of 86, in early 2002. In Miss Briles’ Will she stated her wish would be that a non-profit purchase the home, restore it to the grandeur it once knew and share it with the community as a gathering place. The Junior League of High Point, Inc. has done that and while raising more than $1 million dollars to purchase and renovate the home, are still carrying a debt of approximately $460,000 in a mortgage.
