KIDS IN THE KITCHEN
Join Us Spring 2012!
Millis Regional Health Education Center
|
On Saturday, March 10, 2012, from 10:00-12:00, High Point children will proudly earn their chef hats and participate in exciting, hands-on activities focusing on promoting nutrition and preventing childhood obesity through Kids in the Kitchen. This will be the JLHP’s seventh year of participating in The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc.’s education initiative on childhood obesity and nutrition, which included more than 230 Leagues nationwide. The event will be held at the Millis Regional Health Education Center and is targeted at children in kindergarten through fifth grades. With the focus on raising awareness and helping to reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues, we plan to incorporate three stations into our activities, including:
1. Food safety and hygiene tips, as well as preparation of nutritious snacks by Geissler Baker of NC Cooperative Extension Agency;
2. Exercise and health-related activities in the Millis Center’s activity room; and
3. Reading and participating in activities inspired by the book Food Adventures with Charles the Chef, created by Roosevelt Pitt and Mshindo Kuumba to help children develop good eating habits.
The children will learn about the food pyramid and the frequency with which certain food should be eaten. They will make fun and nutritious snacks, including veggie dippers, fruit kebobs and apple snackers. We hope to empower each child to take control of their nutrition by providing snacks that can easily and affordably be recreated at home, which is critical to Kids in the Kitchen’s goal of teaching children how to make nutritious eating a part of their daily lives. The children will also experience the ease and importance of exercise as they dance, jump rope, and play. We hope the children will leave happy and armed with the knowledge of how to live healthier lives.
