A Message from the 2008-2009 Briles House Committee Chair

It has finally all come together. Rentals are gaining momentum and we have conquered our occupancy issue! We can now advertise that the Briles House can accommodate 100 people on the first floor! We are so excited to be able to entice larger groups to the house with this change. Every rental we book gets us one step closer to paying off our mortgage! The exterior of the home is thriving with our maturing landscape. The addition of trees along the front drive, planted in honor of Britt Tyson, and the 100 azaleas we received from our grant given to us by NC Beautiful (which all bloomed beautifully this Spring), enhance this stately home. The original plantings that had been neglected and overgrown are now becoming strong again and new things pop up every day. In fact, I recently noticed a lone red tulip in one of the circular front beds. Mrs. Briles loved red tulips and it has been said that she had them planted in this area long ago, but none have been seen until now!

The house was a perfect backdrop for our Spring Fundraiser - a Kentucky Derby Party held May 2, 2009. We had one hundred people draped along its front porch decked out in their Derby finest of large bonnets and seersucker pants, sipping wine and mint juleps, enjoying the home for the purpose for which it was intended when built 102 years ago- now that’s Southern hospitality!

The community of High Point is so fortunate to have the Briles House as one of the crown jewels remaining on Main Street. You should feel proud as a member of this League that stepped up and took charge of preserving the past for all to enjoy. It is a feat that few people have the bravery or ability to pull off…and WE did it!
