2008-2009 Children's Learning Center Year in Review and Look Forward
|
The Children’s Learning Center Committee had a productive year during the 2008-2009 League year. We developed a prototype for the artifact kits we will be using with preschool children next year. The kit is called “S is for Sock,” and focuses on letter recognition and vocabulary building. The committee will be developing additional kits around different letters of the alphabet. We were also thrilled to establish a relationship with the Beta Omicron chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma teachers’ sorority. They will be assisting us in developing the remainder of the kits. Additionally, the committee assisted with the second annual Kickoff to Kindergarten: Parent Days in conjunction with the Greensboro Children’s Museum, Guilford County Schools and several other community partners. The event attracted even more participants than last year. Parents received valuable information about registering their children for kindergarten and other community resources to help their children have a successful first year of school. The committee will continue to prepare the Little Red Schoolhouse for hosting our Children’s Learning Center programs. The historic structure was first built in 1930 as an annex to Ray Street School. Many High Pointers remember attending class in the building, and we are happy that it will soon be used for educating local children again. We anticipate launching the program in the spring of 2010.

Project History
|
*Late 2005 Junior League of High Point approached High Point Museum about partnering
*Goal to develop a literacy based museum program for young children
*Vision was a “museum without walls:” structured learning opportunities at the High Point Museum that could also be taken out to daycare centers, schools, community events, etc.
*All programs would include literacy building components with a historical or community focus.
*Spring 2008 JLHP partners with High Point Museum, Greensboro Children's Museum, Guilford Child Development-Head Start/Early Head Start, Guilford Partnership for Children-More at Four, Get Healthy Guilford and Guilford County Schools Pre-K to launch the first annual "Kickoff to Kindergarten: Parent Day." This transition fair focuses on putting parents at ease with the school system and registration process and also stressing to parents the importance of taking an active role in their child's education.
*In 2008-09 year, continued developing our signature project, the JLHP’s Children’s Learning Center in collaboration with the High Point Museum. The Beta Omicron chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher's sorority also began working with us. The goal of this project is to create a literacy-based museum program for children.
